On September 18th 1947, the United States Air Force became a separate branch of the armed forces. Its personnel strength peaked during the Korean War, when it comprised nearly a million people; around 900,000 served during the Vietnam War as well. Today, the U.S. Air Force has approximately 320,000 personnel. It is the most funded air force in the world and possesses the largest fleet of aircraft.
